The Challenge
Travelers want surprising, affordable experiences off the beaten path, but often face concerns about cost, safety, and discovering trustworthy options. The challenge was to design a solution that offers new, eco-friendly destinations, while putting users’ safety and comfort first, and making it easy to search, compare, and book.

I analyzed existing travel services and tour providers to understand how they present “adventure + value” packages, how they build trust, and how they structure their search and filtering features. This informed benchmarks for usability and design patterns.

Affinity Diagram
I grouped interview insights using an affinity diagram to surface recurring themes: adventure vs safety, price sensitivity, desire for authentic/off-grid experiences, trust in visuals and classification. Used an empathy map to understand what users think, feel, see, do, and hear. These tools clarified user mindset and shaped priorities.

From the research, I developed one or more user personas embodying typical explorers: their needs, frustrations (e.g. distrust in generic travel sites, concerns about safety, cost), goals (unique experiences, ease of booking, trust), and behavioral traits. This ensured every design decision stayed user-centred.

I used MoSCoW (Must-Have, Should-Have, Could-Have, Won’t-Have) to prioritize features: essential functionality (search, filters, booking), desirable ones (volunteer/tour-cause options, last-minute deals), and those deferred. This kept scope focused and aligned with user impact.

Mapped the path from discovering a trip to booking: search → filter → preview (photos/videos) → select accommodation/transport options → confirm booking. Identified friction points (e.g. trust gaps, unclear classification) and opportunities to create smoother, more intuitive transitions.

Created low-fidelity wireframes to visualize layout, hierarchy, and flow. Then tested these with potential users to check whether search/filter options made sense, destination previews felt engaging, and steps were clear. Incorporated feedback to refine structure before moving to final design.
